The Plastic Challenge

As is widely reported in all forms of mass media, the global problem of excessive plastic waste has reached crisis levels.

It has been estimated that in the 60-70 years since plastic production began, 8.3 billion tons of virgin plastic has been produced and nearly all the plastic ever created still exists in some form today.

An estimated 6.3 billion tons of plastic waste had been generated as of 2015, of which only 9% was recycled. If current plastic production and waste management trends continue, 12 billion tons of plastic will be in landfills and the natural environment by 2050.
